چکیده

In this paper we compare characteristics of different FIFO packet switch types. In accordance with our expectations, the best results are obtained by using the output-queued packet switches. The main drawback of these switches is the need for a fast switching fabric. This can be avoided by using the input-queued packet switches, whose performance depends upon individual packet sizes. Characteristics of the input-queued packet switches are similar to those of the output-queued packet switches; if fixed-size packets are transferred, the consequences of the output-contention problem are relatively small. Transfer of the variable-size packets in the input-queued switches is more complicated. Practically, a 100% throughput can be achieved if an asynchronous switching fabric is applied. Packet delays are in this case comparable to those in the output-queued packet switches. The drawback of such switches is the inability to differentiate among multiple service classes. On the other hand, by using a synchronous switching fabric, a 100% switch throughput of cannot be achieved. Another disadvantage of the synchronous packet switches are relatively high packet delays. However, usage of such switches enables a differentiation between multiple service classes, that is one of the conditions for enabling

Efficient Multicast Support in High-Speed Packet Switches

The tremendous growth of the Internet coupled with newly emerging applications has created a vital need for multicast traffic support by backbone routers and ATM switches. Considerable research work has been done on Input Queued (IQ) switches to handle multicast traffic flows. Unfortunately, all previously proposed solutions were of no practical value because they either lack performance or wer...

Performance of STC104 vs. Telegraphos

We consider continuous routing on nn switches with various buuering schemes. By extending these models to networks, we analyze two 1024-node, unique-path, butterry-like networks conngured with input-output buuered STC104 32 32 switches, or central buuered Telegraphos 4 4 switches. 0 Introduction Parallel and distributed systems consist of processors communicating over an interconnection network...

Comparison-Based FIFO Buffer Management in QoS Switches

The following online problem arises in network devices, e.g., switches, with quality of service (QoS) guarantees. In each time step, an arbitrary number of packets arrive at a single FIFO buffer and only one packet can be transmitted. Packets may be kept in the buffer of limited size and, due to the FIFO property, the sequence of transmitted packets has to be a subsequence of the arriving packe...

On Packet Switches With Infinite Storage

Most prior work on congestion in datagram systems focuses on buffer management. We find it illuminating to consider the case of a packet switch with infinite storage. Such a packet switch can never run out of buffers. It can, however, still become congested. The meaning of congestion in an infinite-storage system is explored. We demonstrate the unexpected result that a datagram network with inf...

A Novel ATM Traffic Scheduler for Real-Time Multimedia Data Transport with Improved Packet Level QoS

In this paper, we propose an efficient scheduling scheme called Multi-layer Gated Frame Queueing (MGFQ) for real-time traffics over ATM networks. ATM switches equipped with function of MGFQ which employs only one set of FIFO queues can provide real-time multimedia communication with a wide range of QoS requirements. In addition, a hybrid design which combines MGFQ scheme with Age Priority Packe...
